HTML <div> tag

Definition

The <div> tag doesn't affect our web page directly but is generally used to group block-level content for attribution or styling with CSS.

The <div> tag is a block element ie. it starts on a new line and covers the whole width of the page.

A document can have more than one <div> tag.

For attribution or CSS styling of inline content use the <span> tag instead.

Use the <article>, <aside>, <nav> and <section> elements where appropriate in HTML5 rather than the <div> element which would have been used in HTML4.

Example

<div style="font-style:italic;">
